Details Of GEOGRAPHY Department

Geography (GEOA) is a lab based honours subject available in Day shift under the BACHELOR OF SCIENCE Course in our college.

The department of Geography started its journey as a General subject in 2002. The Honours course was introduced in the following year with the sole vision to cater to the growing academic needs of the students. Since then, the department has witnessed increasing number of students with each passing year, both in the Honours and General courses. It has abundant collections of various geographical books and data Sheets in its Seminar Library for ready reference to the faculty members and students. Besides, the library of the college is being enriched each year with complimentary copies of the reference books that are easy available to the students and teachers. The department also provides basic instruments for practical works and supports six computers with RS-GIS Softwares. The department owns a number of GPS units which have been proved to be useful during the field surveys. Each year, both the Honours and General course students are guided for outdoor field surveys with the active participation of the teachers in order to get the actual hands-on experience of the application of the study, which is indeed a wonderful experience for both the students and teachers.
The department runs in two shiftsMorning (Womens section) and Day (Co-educational section). General classes of the Morning section are held during the stipulated timings, while the Honours classes of the Morning section are clubbed together and held with the Day section. It offers 3 years B.Sc. (Honours and General) courses under the up-to-date CBCS syllabi of the West Bengal State University from 2018. Prior to 2008, both the Honours and General courses of the department used to follow the University of Calcutta curriculum.
The Department of Geography has successfully nourished students who have already proved their abilities in many spheres of academic activities. Most of its students pursue master degree after completing graduation, and many of them proceed for research. Many students of this department have successfully qualified in different employment related competitive examinations like School Service Commission, Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, West Bengal Civil Service, Indian Police Service etc. Many of our students have expertise in the field of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System, and got placed in several corporate companies as area planners.
Lastly, the department provides an excellent atmosphere for the academic interaction. Such interactions not only enrich a student with knowledge, also the teachers get an opportunities to understand the outlook of the pupils.

We have a well equipped Laboratory for both Honours and General courses with different instruments such as Prismatic Compass, Dumpy Level, Transit Theodolite, GPS, Soil PH Meter, Soil-testing kit, Portable Barometer, six computers with printer and scanner, and other instruments essential for conducting practical classes.
In addition, we have a well-stocked Seminar Library.

Organization of Departmental seminars that includes presentation by the students and teachers, publishing wall magazine, conducting excursion for the students. Apart from this, students are encouraged to participate in the workshops and poster presentations organized in home and other institutes. The department also arranges PPT presentations for easy way of understanding the class lectures.
